The guiding concept “A cheer for every challenge” used as a company’s internal recognition program resonated deeply with me. Throughout my journey—from playing on Nadeshiko Japan, the women’s national soccer Japan team, to now serving as a community organizer of WE LEAGUE—I have faced many challenges, each pushing me forward. Here, I’d like to share some of the mindsets that have kept me motivated along the way.

The Sompo Group’s internal recognition program, the SOMPO Awards have a unique focus. Unlike most company programs that emphasize victory and success, the SOMPO Awards celebrate the challenges themselves and the passion fueling each initiative. This approach highlights the importance of employees’ dedication and spirit of perseverance. The Sompo Group has entered into a title partnership agreement with WE LEAGUE, Japan’s professional women’s football league. In a joint event between the Sompo Group’s SOMPO Awards and WE LEAGUE, I shared insights on challenges faced by athletes and some hints to embrace and conquer them.

My six guiding principles

My life has been defined by challenges, but I have learned to live by six guiding principles that keep me moving forward.

  1. Only actions matter. Muster the courage to try.
  2. The future will shape the present.
  3. Treasure every connection.
  4. Setbacks are not final, but quitting is.
  5. Transform cheers of encouragement to be your strength.
  6. Cheer others on.

In moments of struggle, it’s easy to lose sight of the obvious. I’ve experienced firsthand that those are the times when the power of cheers of encouragement from those around us becomes invaluable. At one point, after a winding journey filled with ups and downs, I stepped away from soccer. But thanks to the supportive connections I’ve made and the time I spent reflecting on my true goals, I found clarity in what I genuinely wanted to pursue. And that was to tackle challenges head-on and continue playing soccer.

I think the SOMPO Awards embrace a powerful mindset: celebrate not only success but also the passion and perseverance behind every effort. I’m impressed to see an official program where employees can celebrate each other’s challenges and share cheers of encouragement. I’ve experienced the impact of cheering for encouragement firsthand. At the 2011 World Cup, our team carried both the hope of advancing women’s soccer and the resilience of a nation recovering from disaster. Through shared purpose and constant support, we achieved a unity that showed in our success.

When we celebrate the courage to try, we’re celebrating what it means to be human. This spirit of encouragement and support has the power to lift us all, helping us become not just better achievers, but better community members.

Through the SOMPO Awards, we aim to support the challenges of each employee and evolve into a culture of fearlessly taking on challenges. The Sompo Holdings Sustainability Report 2024 also features what SOMPO Awards have achieved and how it has evolved.
